A notary public (“Notary”) or a commissioner for taking affidavits (“Commissioner”) is an individual who is authorized by the Province of Ontario to undertake certain actions, including: acting as an official witness to the execution (signing) of legal documents; attesting that documents are exact replicas of the original; administering oaths, solemn affirmations, and declarations, which are commonly used in affidavits and statutory declarations.
OUC’s Notary/Commissioner services require that individuals provide two pieces of government-issued identification in order for the Notary/Commissioner to verify your identity.
If you are asking the Notary/Commissioner to witness your signature, you must sign any documents in the physical presence of the Notary/Commissioner.
It is important to note that a Notary/Commissioner will not review the content of your documents or provide any legal advice. The Notary/Commissioner will simply witness your signature; confirm a document to be a true copy; or, if administering an oath, will ask you to affirm or declare the truth of the document’s contents.
