OUC offers law students and law school graduates the opportunity to work closely with and learn from a team of skilled and experienced counsel and legal professionals who dedicate their practices to supporting an internationally recognized University. In addition to conducting legal research and writing, Summer Law Students and Articling Students assist legal counsel and legal professionals in all aspects of their practices, including client engagement, negotiations with opposing counsel, mediations and hearings, and collective bargaining, as required.
OUC provides trusted advice to academic and administrative leadership to foster sound decision making in fulfilling the University’s institutional priorities. OUC is comprised of 17 lawyers and a robust support team dedicated to the mission of providing excellence in client service. The advice provided is both general and specialized as the breadth of legal issues at one of North America’s largest universities is complex, varied, and diverse.
The articling placement is designed with an emphasis on mentorship and client-focused interactions which will support new lawyers in better understanding the importance of client context in advice and legal support in their future practices. The successful candidate chosen to work within OUC can expect exposure to:
OUC’s unique placement will provide a rigorous learning experience for students as they play a key role in supporting the work of OUC and have opportunities to work with all members of OUC, University clientele, and the University’s external legal partners.
The placement is governed by the Law Society of Ontario and is 10 months in duration beginning in August and ending in June. OUC provides orientation, training, supervision, mentoring, and regular evaluation to the successful candidate. Compensation is comparable to Articling Student salaries at government agencies and other public sector organizations.

The Summer Law Student placements are designed to expose students to a wide range of legal practices, while also allowing focus over the course of a summer in specific areas of interest. Summer Law Students can expect an immersive learning experience as they play a key role in supporting the work of OUC and its University clients.
The OUC will provide an initial orientation and ongoing training, mentorship, and supervision of the successful candidate(s).
The Summer Law Student Program is only available to University of Toronto Faculty of Law students.
